The minimum age of hiring a car on Ibiza is 21. A valid driving licence and photo ID are required. It is important to read and understand the rental agreement paying attention to any mileage limits, insurance policies and if there is a supplement for an extra driver. It is also worth your while checking over the car for any scratches or bumps before taking it on the road; once you have driven away you are liable for any damage caused to the car even if it wasn’t your wrongdoing.
Although seemingly unknown to a proportion of the local drivers, there are speed limits in operation on the island. There is a maximum speed of 50km/h (31mph) inside towns and 90km/h (56mph) outside of towns. As is the case within the UK, there are strict guidelines on drink driving, with the limit being slightly lower than back home. Throughout the summer months, there is a large police presence on the roads, with the best advice being not to take any risks.
Car parking spaces can become relatively scarce in town centres, especially during the peak season. Some pavements are marked with blue or yellow lines; blue lines indicate that a pay and display system is in operation, where as parking on yellow lines should be avoided at all times. Be aware that some local drivers use their bumpers as their parktronic device and are not concerned about denting your paintwork!
